Murcia GTUG’s First Anniversary

I started working on organizing Murcia GTUG on December 2010. Since then a lot has happened. Our first event the 11th of Murcia, Google I/O Extended and up to 11 more events after that.

It has been a great experience organizing and participating in  all these events. Great speakers have come up on stage and great talks have been given. I have to thank all of them, it’s been a pleasure and I hope that you’ll be able to give even more talks! And also, for those that still haven’t given one, it’ll be great to share stuff with other devs!

I also have to thank CEEIM and Droiders, our sponsors. And android.es as our media partners. Apart from that, a lot of other blogs have put up posts about our events like androcode, androidsis, elandroidelibre

A lot of interesting events are coming very soon, so keep tuned! I hope we can say this group lasts for a lot more years!

Talking about my entrepreneurial experience at Cloud Incubator

Cloud Incubator is an interesting project that takes place in El Parque Tecnológico de Fuente Álamo, organized by teachers from the Universidad Politécnicas de Cartagena, opened to mobile entrepreneurs from Murcia.

It’s an incubator that let’s mobile entrepreneurs to start the companies giving them a lot of interesting facilities. One of the activities that they organize is Cloud Incubator Afterhours, an event done the last Thursday of every month.

I was invited to February’s event last Thursday to talk about my experience in software development and entrepreneurship. It’s the first time I had the opportunity to talk about my own experience, and it helped me to organize all that I had done. You can see the presentation in the following link and I’ll update this post with the video.

It was nice to see what the different teams are working on and I met more interesting people. I hope to go to another future event soon :)

VideoInterview in Red.es

red.es is a public entity that tries to promote the use of the Internet in Spanish citizens. They do a lot of different activities like promoting the use of an electronic identity card, computers in school etc.

Luis Iván Cuende and I were asked to be interviewed by them on skype about the startup we’re founding and we gladly accepted. We explained what we’re working on, how we do it at the same time we go to school and Murcia GTUG and Asturix.

You can view the interview below and read the interview in the following link:

Mobile World Congress 2012 – I’ll be there!

Mobile World Congress is coming. YEAAAH!! I’ve been waiting for this for more than one year after an spectacular MWC last year.

Last year was my first year coming to MWC, and that was tough. I wrote about the difficulties I had trying to be allowed to attend said event. And finally GSMA gave me their authorization to attend, and it was a magnificent event.

I didn’t have any problems this year as I’m already 16. I got two passes, one from WiP and another from Blackberry, so I’ll be attending both developer conferences. And Blackberry is giving away a Playbook!!

Apart from that, a lot of new devices are coming up and a lot of interesting new mobile technologies to look out for. And there are also a great number of very important and great people attending this event who I hope I’ll be able to meet.

If you’re attending the event and want to meet up, just tell me :)

How I got 500€ funding in two family meetings for my startup

Founding a company isn’t easy, and one of it’s main difficulties is getting funding. For our startup we’re very lucky that we don’t need much capital to start working, but we needed to get a minimum of 3000€ to start a company.

I thought that it wouldn’t be too hard to find a freelance job and that I’ll get the money like that. But then it wasn’t so easy. I established quite a lot of conversations but I didn’t manage to get the job in the end. The date for founding the startup was coming nearer and I was still quite far away of what I needed.

That’s when I decided to use the 3 Fs (Friends, Fools and Family), even though I really didn’t want to do this because I wanted to get all the money on my own. But I didn’t really have any other option.

I’m quite lucky because I have a massive family, so I decided to do something like crowdfunding, get a bit of money from each family member and with that try get as much money as possible. But in crowdfunding you usually give something in exchange, and I would feel guilty and I think that it would’ve been harder if I hadn’t done this.

I couldn’t give out T-shirts for a 5-10€ donation, but I could give out badges and magnets with out startup’s logo. I wouldn’t have done this if it wasn’t for 2clickas and Puri & Kutxa, who do magnificent badges and magnets. I asked for 50 badges and 50 magnets and in just a few days I had them, just in time for my first family reunion.

I also prepared a piece of paper with information on what I was doing to give out to the different family members indicating that they could give any amount of money they wanted but suggesting 5 to 10€.

So in the different family meetings and when meeting friends I would go from family member to family member giving out a piece of paper and explaining in person my project and why I was doing this sort of crowdfunding.

It was amazing how everyone wanted to help me and support me and everyone came to me giving me some money.  Counting it all up, it’s quite near to 500€, which might not be a lot of money, but it’s what I needed to start running my startup.

Thanks to everyone who helped out!

Meeting Carlos Barrabés and Kintxo Cortés from StepOne

Last Friday wasn’t only amazing for founding my first startup. Luis Iván and I also had the opportunity to meet Carlos Barrabés and Kintxo Cortés, from Stepone. We were surprised while at the notary that we would have the opportunity to meet them, and we were very happy, but we didn’t know what to expect.

When we finished at the notary we went to the StepOne offices. We started talking and suddenly Carlos jumped and said that we should record at least part of our conversation so that a lot of people could watch it. You can watch the video below:

The video got a lot of traction and more than 5000 people have watched the video in just two days. We have received a lot of support messages through Twitter and nearly 200 people have started following me. I’m glad to see that we’re getting to an increasing number of people.

It was a very interesting conversation and Carlos gave us a lot of great tips and has said that he will support us quite a lot. We’re going to be working with him and StepOne so that we’ll be able to go to Sillicon Valley this Summer. I’m sure we’re going to work a lot with him in the near future.

We can only thank Carlos and StepOne for everything.

Founding my first startup

Friday, the 27th of January 2012 was a memorable day. Luis Iván Cuende and I went to the notary to the sign the necessary papers to found our first startup.

Most people will think this is nothing special, anyone can start a company, and yeah, they’re right. But for me it’s very special to see that our project is moving forward very nicely and that we put a very important stone that day.

We’ve been working very hard to have everything ready on time. In the end, we spent nearly the whole morning at the notary with our parents reading and signing everything. It must sound quite boring, but for us this is the start of something we hope will be big.

From now onwards we have a proper company on our backs, and most importantly, a very interesting project that we’re putting all our efforts into.

Being under age is being quite troublesome for all this, but luckily we have very supportive parents that will help us with whatever we need. So I want to publicly appreciate this. We had to put our parents as the administrators of the startup, and hopefully if all goes well, when we’re 18 we’ll finally occupy take that position off them.

I also want to thank CEEIM, CEEI and Instituto de Fomento de Murcia for helping us setting everything up and supporting us a lot through the whole process and the future. If it wouldn’t have been for them, nothing of this would have been possible.

We will publicly announce the startup hopefully in two weeks time, so stay tuned!

New Hosting and WordPress stuff

I recently decided to stop using the free hosting where I had both my website like this blog. A free hosting is cool if you don’t have money, but it’s also too limited. My sites were far too slow and the uptime sucked. Also, some important php functions weren’t activated like cURL so a lot of WordPress functionality wasn’t available. I couldn’t upgrade WordPress automatically, nor plugins or themes. I couldn’t install plugins or themes from my admin page neither. There were some cool plugins like Artsy Editor that needed to validate my License Key, and couldn’t do it so I wasn’t able to use them.

But it’s not like this anymore. Now my websites are hosted with OVH. I got a great hosting plan for just 28€ per year. Now I have aeliasnet.com, alberto-elias.com, alberto-elias.es and aeliasnet.es (which redirects to aeliasnet.com) with OVH and the uptime and the speed of the different sites have been brilliant.

Now that I can do a lot more stuff and much faster, I have updated WordPress to it’s latest version, changed the blog theme to one that’s equally clean and minimalist as the previous one, but a bit more coloured. I’ve also added a mobile version so that anyone can view this blog easily from their mobile device. Apart from this, I’m using Akismet so I don’t need to control the comments I receive, a Twitter widget for the sidebar and an SEO plugin.

I’ve also used this hosting change to update my website. I’ve update all the information and changed my description. The contact form is now working, if someone tried to use it with my previous hosting, I haven’t received that email because of the problems I had with my past hosting company.

I hope you like the new changes and any comments are well received.

Emprender a los 16 – Interview in the magazine Emprendedores

I was delighted to receive an email from a reporter from one of my favourite Spanish magazines, Emprendedores. It’s the most important business magazines here in Spain and I’m a big fan of it.

It’s also the first time I’ve been interviewed by national press, and not just local newspapers and TV channels. It’s a great honour for me to interest a magazine as important as this one.

The interview was over the phone and it was definitely one of the best interviews I’ve had. Rafael Galán is a great professional and he sure knew how to start a nice conversation.

The interview appeared in the magazine’s November issue and today it’s now online in their website where you can all read it.

Murcia GTUG in La Verdad and Puroandroid

I was quite surprised yesterday when reading my Twitter feed I came up with an article in the local newspaper La Verdad where Murcia GTUG appeared. The article is about how INFO is doing a great job impulsing entrepreneurship here in Murcia through CEEIM and how a lot of different events are being organised there in CEEIM, like Murcia GTUG.

Puroandroid is one of the best Android podcasts in Spanish. I met the guys behind it back in February during MWC11 and I was lucky enough to be interviewed by them. They asked mainly about Murcia GTUG and yesterday they put that interview into the latest episode they launched.
